Arjuna asks where to look for Krishna, and Krishna gives him a list of the best of everything: the sun among lights, the Himalaya among mountains, the Ganga among rivers, Garuda among birds, spring among seasons, silence among secrets. Then the twist: all of it is only a spark of his splendour, and he holds up the whole universe with a single fragment of himself.
Neither gods nor sages know his origin; he is theirs. Every quality, from patience and truth to fear and fearlessness, comes from him. For those who love him, he lives in the heart and burns away the dark with the shining lamp of knowledge (10.11).
Out of compassion for them, dwelling in their hearts, I destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.
Verses 10.12–10.18
How should I think of you?
Arjuna is moved: the sages called you supreme, and now you say it yourself. Only you know yourself. So tell me your glories, the forms in which I should think of you. I can never hear enough of your words.
Tell me again in detail, Janardana, of your yoga and your glory, for I never tire of hearing your nectar-like words.
Verses 10.19–10.29
The Himalaya among mountains
Krishna begins: I am the Self in every heart, the beginning, middle and end. Among lights I am the sun, among stars the moon, among mountains Meru, among waters the ocean, among words Om, among immovable things the Himalaya.
Among the great sages I am Bhrigu; among words, the single syllable Om; among sacrifices, the silent repetition of a name; among immovable things, the Himalaya.
aśvatthaḥ sarvavṛkṣāṇāṃ devarṣīṇāṃ ca nāradaḥ gandharvāṇāṃ citrarathaḥ siddhānāṃ kapilo muniḥ
Among all trees I am the sacred fig, the ashvattha; among divine sages, Narada; among the celestial musicians, Chitraratha; among the perfected, the sage Kapila.
Among the nagas I am Ananta; among water beings, Varuna; among the ancestors, Aryaman; among those who govern, Yama.
Verses 10.30–10.38
Garuda among birds, the Ganga among rivers
Among beasts the lion, among birds Garuda, among rivers the Ganga, among letters the first one, A. He is time without end, death that takes all, spring in flower, victory, determination, and among secrets, silence.
Of all creations I am the beginning, the end and also the middle, Arjuna; among sciences, the knowledge of the Self; in those who debate, the reasoning.
I am all-devouring death and the origin of what is yet to be; among feminine qualities I am fame, fortune, speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and patience.
I am the rod of those who rule and the statecraft of those who seek victory; among secrets I am silence, and I am the knowledge of the knowers.
Verses 10.39–10.42
One fragment holds it all
There is no end to his glories; this was only a sample. Whatever is glorious, beautiful or powerful is a spark of his splendour (10.41). And then: why know all this? I hold up the whole universe with a single fragment of myself.
