Vishwaroopa Darshana Yoga

The Yoga of the Vision of the Universal Form · 55 verses

Arjuna asks to see Krishna as he truly is, and is given divine sight. What he sees is overwhelming: the whole universe in one body, the light of a thousand suns, mouths like the fires at the end of time devouring the warriors. "I am Time," says Krishna, "be merely my instrument." Shaken, Arjuna begs forgiveness for every casual word between friends, and Krishna returns to his gentle form.

Verses 11.1–11.8

The universe in one body

Arjuna's delusion is gone, but now he wants to see. Krishna agrees: behold the whole universe, moving and unmoving, gathered in my body (11.7). But these eyes can't see it, so I give you divine sight.

11.1

Arjuna said

madanugrahāya paramaṃ guhyamadhyātmasaṃjñitam
yattvayoktaṃ vacastena moho'yaṃ vigato mama

Out of kindness to me you have spoken the supreme secret, the knowledge of the Self, and by your words my delusion is gone.

11.2

bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānāṃ śrutau vistaraśo mayā
tvattaḥ kamalapatrākṣa māhātmyamapi cāvyayam

I have heard from you in detail how beings come into existence and pass away, lotus-eyed one, and of your imperishable greatness.

11.3

evametadyathāttha tvamātmānaṃ parameśvara
draṣṭumicchāmi te rūpamaiśvaraṃ puruṣottama

It is just as you have described yourself, supreme Lord. Yet I long to see your divine form, Supreme Person.

11.4

manyase yadi tacchakyaṃ mayā draṣṭumiti prabho
yogeśvara tato me tvaṃ darśayā'tmānamavyayam

If you think I am able to see it, Lord, master of yoga, then show me your imperishable Self.

11.5

Krishna said

paśya me pārtha rūpāṇi śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ
nānāvidhāni divyāni nānāvarṇākṛtīni ca

Behold, Partha, my forms by the hundreds and the thousands: many kinds, divine, of many colours and shapes.

11.6

paśyādityānvasūnrudrānaśvinau marutastathā
bahūnyadṛṣṭapūrvāṇi paśyā'ścaryāṇi bhārata

Behold the Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the twin Ashvins and the Maruts; behold many wonders never seen before, Bharata.

11.7

ihaikasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ paśyādya sacarācaram
mama dehe guḍākeśa yaccānyaddraṣṭumicchasi

Behold here today, Gudakesha, the whole universe, moving and unmoving, gathered in one place within my body, and whatever else you wish to see.

11.8

na tu māṃ śakyase draṣṭumanenaiva svacakṣuṣā
divyaṃ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya me yogamaiśvaram

But you cannot see me with these eyes of yours. I give you divine sight: behold my sovereign yoga.

Verses 11.9–11.14

If a thousand suns rose at once

Sanjaya describes it to the blind king: countless mouths and eyes, divine ornaments and weapons, facing every way. If a thousand suns blazed in the sky at once, that might be like the splendour of that great Self (11.12). Arjuna, hair on end, bows.

11.9

Sanjaya said

evamuktvā tato rājanmahāyogeśvaro hariḥ
darśayāmāsa pārthāya paramaṃ rūpamaiśvaram

Having spoken thus, O king, Hari, the great lord of yoga, showed Partha his supreme, sovereign form,

11.10

anekavaktranayanamanekādbhutadarśanam
anekadivyābharaṇaṃ divyānekodyatāyudham

with countless mouths and eyes, countless wondrous sights, countless divine ornaments and countless raised divine weapons,

11.11

divyamālyāmbaradharaṃ divyagandhānulepanam
sarvāścaryamayaṃ devamanantaṃ viśvatomukham

wearing divine garlands and robes, anointed with divine fragrances, all-wondrous, radiant, infinite, facing every direction.

11.12

divi sūryasahasrasya bhavedyugapadutthitā
yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syādbhāsastasya mahātmanaḥ

If the light of a thousand suns were to blaze forth at once in the sky, it might resemble the splendour of that great Self.

11.13

tatraikasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ pravibhaktamanekadhā
apaśyaddevadevasya śarīre pāṇḍavastadā

There, in the body of the God of gods, Pandava then saw the whole universe, divided in many ways, gathered as one.

11.14

tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭo hṛṣṭaromā dhanañjayaḥ
praṇamya śirasā devaṃ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata

Then Dhananjaya, overwhelmed with wonder, his hair standing on end, bowed his head to the Lord and spoke with joined palms.

Verses 11.15–11.25

No beginning, no middle, no end

Arjuna tries to describe it: all the gods inside, arms and eyes without number, no beginning, middle or end, the sun and moon for eyes, a mouth of blazing fire (11.19). The three worlds tremble, and so does he.

11.15

Arjuna said

paśyāmi devāṃstava deva dehe
sarvāṃstathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṅghān
brahmāṇamīśaṃ kamalāsanastha
mṛṣīṃśca sarvānuragāṃśca divyān

I see in your body, O God, all the gods and the hosts of beings: Brahma the lord seated on the lotus, all the sages and the divine serpents.

11.16

anekabāhūdaravaktranetraṃ
paśyāmi tvāṃ sarvato'nantarūpam
nāntaṃ na madhyaṃ na punastavādiṃ
paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa

I see you with countless arms, bellies, mouths and eyes, infinite in form on every side. I see no end, no middle and no beginning of you, Lord of the universe, universal form.

11.17

kirīṭinaṃ gadinaṃ cakriṇaṃ ca
tejorāśiṃ sarvatodīptimantam
paśyāmi tvāṃ durnirīkṣyaṃ samantā
ddīptānalārkadyutimaprameyam

I see you with crown, mace and discus, a mass of radiance shining everywhere, hard to look at, blazing all round like fire and sun, immeasurable.

11.18

tvamakṣaraṃ paramaṃ veditavyaṃ
tvamasya viśvasya paraṃ nidhānam
tvamavyayaḥ śāśvatadharmagoptā
sanātanastvaṃ puruṣo mato me

You are the imperishable, the supreme one to be known; you are the final resting place of this universe; you are the undying guardian of eternal dharma; you are, I believe, the eternal Person.

11.19

anādimadhyāntamanantavīrya
manantabāhuṃ śaśisūryanetram
paśyāmi tvāṃ dīptahutāśavaktram
svatejasā viśvamidaṃ tapantam

Without beginning, middle or end, of infinite power, with countless arms, the sun and moon your eyes, I see you, your mouth a blazing fire, burning this universe with your radiance.

11.20

vyāptaṃ tvayaikena diśaśca sarvāḥ
dṛṣṭvā'dbhutaṃ rūpamugraṃ tavedaṃ
lokatrayaṃ pravyathitaṃ mahātman

The space between heaven and earth and all the directions are filled by you alone. Seeing this wondrous, terrible form of yours, great Self, the three worlds tremble.

11.21

amī hi tvāṃ surasaṅghāḥ viśanti
kecidbhītāḥ prāñjalayo gṛṇanti
svastītyuktvā maharṣisiddhasaṅghāḥ
stuvanti tvāṃ stutibhiḥ puṣkalābhiḥ

These hosts of gods enter into you; some, afraid, praise you with joined palms. Bands of great sages and the perfected cry "Peace!" and praise you with abundant hymns.

11.22

rudrādityā vasavo ye ca sādhyā
viśve'śvinau marutaścoṣmapāśca
gandharvayakṣāsurasiddhasaṅghā
vīkṣante tvāṃ vismitāścaiva sarve

The Rudras, Adityas, Vasus, Sadhyas, Vishvedevas, the Ashvins, the Maruts and the ancestors, and hosts of celestial musicians, yakshas, demons and the perfected all gaze at you in amazement.

11.23

rūpaṃ mahatte bahuvaktranetraṃ
mahābāho bahubāhūrupādam
bahūdaraṃ bahudaṃṣṭrākarālaṃ
dṛṣṭvā lokāḥ pravyathitāstathā'ham

Seeing your great form, mighty-armed, with many mouths and eyes, many arms, thighs and feet, many bellies and terrible tusks, the worlds tremble, and so do I.

11.24

nabhaḥspṛśaṃ dīptamanekavarṇaṃ
vyāttānanaṃ dīptaviśālanetram
dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṃ pravyathitāntarātmā
dhṛtiṃ na vindāmi śamaṃ ca viṣṇo

Seeing you touching the sky, blazing in many colours, mouths gaping, huge eyes burning, my inmost self trembles, Vishnu, and I find no courage and no peace.

11.25

daṃṣṭrākarālāni ca te mukhāni
dṛṣṭvaiva kālānalasannibhāni
diśo na jāne na labhe ca śarma
prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa

Seeing your mouths with their terrible tusks, like the fires at the end of time, I lose all sense of direction and find no refuge. Be gracious, Lord of gods, refuge of the world.

Verses 11.26–11.31

Like moths into a flame

He sees the warriors of both armies, Bhishma, Drona, Karna and his own, rushing into those mouths like rivers into the ocean, like moths into a blazing flame (11.28–29). "Who are you?" he cries. "I don't understand what you are doing."

11.26

amī ca tvāṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāḥ
sarve sahaivāvanipālasaṅghaiḥ
bhīṣmo droṇaḥ sūtaputrastathā'sau
sahāsmadīyairapi yodhamukhyaiḥ

All these sons of Dhritarashtra, with the hosts of kings, Bhishma, Drona and Karna, together with the chief warriors on our side too,

11.27

vaktrāṇi te tvaramāṇā viśanti
daṃṣṭrākarālāni bhayānakāni
kecidvilagnā daśanāntareṣu
saṃdṛśyante cūrṇitairuttamāṅgaiḥ

rush headlong into your fearful mouths with their terrible tusks; some are seen caught between your teeth, their heads crushed to powder.

11.28

yathā nadīnāṃ bahavo'mbuvegāḥ
samudramevābhimukhāḥ dravanti
tathā tavāmī naralokavīrā
viśanti vaktrāṇyabhivijvalanti

As the many torrents of rivers race toward the ocean, so these heroes of the world of men enter your flaming mouths.

11.29

yathā pradīptaṃ jvalanaṃ pataṅgā
viśanti nāśāya samṛddhavegāḥ
tathaiva nāśāya viśanti lokā
stavāpi vaktrāṇi samṛddhavegāḥ

As moths rush into a blazing flame to their destruction, so these worlds rush into your mouths to their destruction.

11.30

lelihyase grasamānaḥ samantā
llokānsamagrānvadanairjvaladbhiḥ
tejobhirāpūrya jagatsamagraṃ
bhāsastavogrāḥ pratapanti viṣṇo

Devouring all the worlds on every side with your flaming mouths, you lick your lips; your fierce rays fill the whole universe with radiance and scorch it, Vishnu.

11.31

ākhyāhi me ko bhavānugrarūpo
namo'stu te devavara prasīda
vijñātumicchāmi bhavantamādyaṃ
na hi prajānāmi tava pravṛttim

Tell me who you are, with this terrible form. I bow to you, best of gods; be gracious. I wish to know you, the primal one, for I do not understand what you are doing.

Verses 11.32–11.34

Be merely the instrument

"I am Time, the destroyer of worlds" (11.32). Even without Arjuna, none of these warriors will survive; they are already slain. So stand up, win glory, and be merely the instrument.

11.32

Krishna said

kālo'smi lokakṣayakṛtpravṛddho
lokānsamāhartumiha pravṛttaḥ
ṛte'pi tvāṃ na bhaviṣyanti sarve
ye'vasthitāḥ pratyanīkeṣu yodhāḥ

I am Time, the mighty destroyer of worlds, here engaged in destroying the worlds. Even without you, none of these warriors arrayed in the opposing armies will survive.

11.33

tasmāttvamuttiṣṭha yaśo labhasva
jitvā śatrūn bhuṅkṣva rājyaṃ samṛddham
mayaivaite nihatāḥ pūrvameva
nimittamātraṃ bhava savyasācin

So stand up and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a prosperous kingdom. They have already been slain by me; be merely the instrument, you who can shoot with either hand.

11.34

droṇaṃ ca bhīṣmaṃ ca jayadrathaṃ ca
karṇaṃ tathā'nyānapi yodhavīrān
mayā hatāṃstvaṃ jahi mā vyathiṣṭhā
yudhyasva jetāsi raṇe sapatnān

Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna and the other heroic warriors are already slain by me; kill them, do not waver. Fight, and you will conquer your rivals in battle.

Verses 11.35–11.46

Forgive me, I called you friend

Trembling, Arjuna bows again and again: salutations in front, behind, on every side. Then the tender part: forgive me for every time I called you "Krishna, friend," joked with you, sat and ate with you. Bear with me as a friend bears with a friend. Show me your four-armed form again.

11.35

Sanjaya said

etacchrutvā vacanaṃ keśavasya
kṛtāñjalirvepamānaḥ kirīṭī
namaskṛtvā bhūya evāha kṛṣṇaṃ
sagadgadaṃ bhītabhītaḥ praṇamya

Hearing these words of Keshava, the crowned one, trembling, joined his palms and bowed; and bowing again, overcome with fear, he spoke to Krishna in a choked voice.

11.36

Arjuna said

sthāne hṛṣīkeśa tava prakīrtyā
jagat prahṛṣyatyanurajyate ca
rakṣāṃsi bhītāni diśo dravanti
sarve namasyanti ca siddhasaṅghāḥ

It is right, Hrishikesha, that the world delights and rejoices in praising you; demons flee in fear in every direction, and all the hosts of the perfected bow down.

11.37

kasmācca te na nameranmahātman
garīyase brahmaṇo'pyādikartre
ananta deveśa jagannivāsa
tvamakṣaraṃ sadasattatparaṃ yat

And why should they not bow to you, great Self, greater even than Brahma, the first creator? Infinite Lord of gods, refuge of the world, you are the imperishable, being and non-being, and what lies beyond both.

11.38

tvamādidevaḥ puruṣaḥ purāṇa
stvamasya viśvasya paraṃ nidhānam
vettāsi vedyaṃ ca paraṃ ca dhāma
tvayā tataṃ viśvamanantarūpa

You are the first God, the ancient Person, the supreme resting place of this universe; you are the knower and what is to be known, the highest abode. By you the universe is pervaded, infinite form.

11.39

vāyuryamo'gnirvaruṇaḥ śaśāṅkaḥ
prajāpatistvaṃ prapitāmahaśca
namo namaste'stu sahasrakṛtvaḥ
punaśca bhūyo'pi namo namaste

You are Vayu, Yama, Agni, Varuna, the moon, Prajapati and the great-grandsire. Salutations to you, a thousand times salutations, and again and again salutations to you!

11.40

namaḥ purastādatha pṛṣṭhataste
namo'stu te sarvata eva sarva
anantavīryāmitavikramastvaṃ
sarvaṃ samāpnoṣi tato'si sarvaḥ

Salutations to you in front and behind, salutations on every side, you who are all. Infinite in power, immeasurable in might, you pervade all, and so you are all.

11.41

sakheti matvā prasabhaṃ yaduktaṃ
he kṛṣṇa he yādava he sakheti
ajānatā mahimānaṃ tavedaṃ
mayā pramādātpraṇayena vāpi

Thinking of you only as a friend, I rashly called you "Krishna! Yadava! Friend!", not knowing your greatness, out of carelessness or affection;

11.42

yaccāvahāsārthamasatkṛto'si
vihāraśayyāsanabhojaneṣu
eko'thavāpyacyuta tatsamakṣaṃ
tatkṣāmaye tvāmahamaprameyam

and if in jest I showed you disrespect, while playing, resting, sitting or eating, alone or in company, Achyuta, I ask forgiveness of you, the immeasurable.

11.43

pitāsi lokasya carācarasya
tvamasya pūjyaśca gururgarīyān
na tvatsamo'styabhyadhikaḥ kuto'nyo
lokatraye'pyapratimaprabhāva

You are the father of this world, of all that moves and does not move; you are its worshipful and most honoured teacher. There is none equal to you in the three worlds; how could there be any greater, you of incomparable power?

11.44

tasmātpraṇamya praṇidhāya kāyaṃ
prasādaye tvāmahamīśamīḍyam
piteva putrasya sakheva sakhyuḥ
priyaḥ priyāyārhasi deva soḍhum

So, bowing and laying my body down before you, I seek your grace, adorable Lord. As a father with his son, a friend with a friend, a lover with the beloved, please bear with me, O God.

11.45

adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ hṛṣito'smi dṛṣṭvā
bhayena ca pravyathitaṃ mano me
tadeva me darśaya deva rūpaṃ
prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa

I rejoice to have seen what was never seen before, yet my mind is shaken with fear. Show me, God, that other form of yours; be gracious, Lord of gods, refuge of the world.

11.46

kirīṭinaṃ gadinaṃ cakrahasta
micchāmi tvāṃ draṣṭumahaṃ tathaiva
tenaiva rūpeṇa caturbhujena
sahasrabāho bhava viśvamūrte

I wish to see you as before, with crown, mace and discus in hand. Take that four-armed form, thousand-armed one, universal form.

Verses 11.47–11.55

Seen only by devotion

No Veda, sacrifice or austerity could have shown this; only grace. Krishna takes his gentle human form again and Arjuna's mind returns to itself. What can't be bought can be reached by undivided devotion, by one who works for him without enmity toward any being (11.55).

11.47

Krishna said

mayā prasannena tavārjunedaṃ

yanme tvadanyena na dṛṣṭapūrvam

By my grace, Arjuna, through my own yoga, I have shown you this supreme form, radiant, universal, infinite and primal, which no one but you has ever seen.

11.48

na vedayajñādhyayanairna dānai
rna ca kriyābhirna tapobhirugraiḥ
evaṃrūpaḥ śakya ahaṃ nṛloke
draṣṭuṃ tvadanyena kurupravīra

Not by the Vedas, nor by sacrifices, nor by study, nor by gifts, nor by rituals, nor by fierce austerities can I be seen in this form in the world of men by anyone but you, great hero of the Kurus.

11.49

mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍhabhāvo
dṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ ghoramīdṛṅmamedam
vyapetabhīḥ prītamanāḥ punastvaṃ
tadeva me rūpamidaṃ prapaśya

Do not be afraid or bewildered at seeing this terrible form of mine. Free from fear and glad at heart, behold once more that form of mine.

Sanjaya said

ityarjunaṃ vāsudevastathoktvā
svakaṃ rūpaṃ darśayāmāsa bhūyaḥ
āśvāsayāmāsa ca bhītamenaṃ
bhūtvā punaḥ saumyavapurmahātmā

Having spoken thus to Arjuna, Vasudeva showed his own form again; and taking on his gentle form once more, the great-souled one comforted the frightened Arjuna.

11.51

Arjuna said

dṛṣṭvedaṃ mānuṣaṃ rūpaṃ tavasaumyaṃ janārdana
idānīmasmi saṃvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtiṃ gataḥ

Seeing this gentle human form of yours, Janardana, I am composed again, and my mind is restored to its natural state.

Krishna said

sudurdarśamidaṃ rūpaṃ dṛṣṭavānasi yanmama
devā apyasya rūpasya nityaṃ darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ

This form of mine that you have seen is very hard to see. Even the gods always long to see it.

11.53

nāhaṃ vedairna tapasā na dānena na cejyayā
śakya evaṃvidho draṣṭuṃ dṛṣṭavānasi māṃ yathā

Not by the Vedas, nor by austerity, nor by gifts, nor by sacrifice can I be seen as you have seen me.

11.54

bhaktyā tvananyayā śakyamahamevaṃvidho'rjuna
jñātuṃ dṛṣṭuṃ ca tattvena praveṣṭuṃ ca paraṃtapa

But by undivided devotion, Arjuna, I can be known in this way, seen as I truly am, and entered into, scorcher of foes.

11.55

matkarmakṛnmatparamo madbhaktaḥ saṅgavarjitaḥ
nirvairaḥ sarvabhūteṣu yaḥ sa māmeti pāṇḍava

Whoever works for me, makes me the goal, is devoted to me, free from attachment and without enmity toward any being, comes to me, Pandava.
