The Yoga of the Royal Knowledge and the Royal Secret · 34 verses
Krishna calls this the king of sciences and the king of secrets, and it turns out to be simple. He is the space in which the whole world moves like wind. He is the ritual, the fire, the father and the friend. And he asks for nothing grand: a leaf, a flower, a fruit, a little water, offered with love. No one who turns to him is ever lost.
The king of sciences is easy to practise and known directly (9.2). Everything rests in Krishna, yet he is not caught in anything, just as the mighty wind moves everywhere and still rests in space (9.6).
idaṃ tu te guhyatamaṃ pravakṣyāmyanasūyave jñānaṃ vijñānasahitaṃ yajjñātvā mokṣyase'śubhāt
To you, who do not find fault, I will now reveal this most secret knowledge together with its realisation; knowing it, you will be freed from all that is harmful.
This is the king of sciences, the king of secrets, the supreme purifier. It is known directly, it is in keeping with dharma, it is easy to practise, and it is imperishable.
As the mighty wind, moving everywhere, always rests in space, so know that all beings rest in me.
Verses 9.7–9.10
Sent forth again and again
At the end of each cosmic cycle all beings return to his nature; at the start of the next he sends them forth again. He watches, untouched, as nature does the work and the world turns round and round.
Under my watch, nature brings forth all that moves and does not move; because of this, son of Kunti, the world turns round and round.
Verses 9.11–9.19
The ghee, the fire and the offering
Some mistake him for a mere human; the great-souled worship him as the source. He is the ritual and the ghee and the fire, father and mother, goal and friend. He gives the heat, holds back the rain and sends it forth (9.19).
I am the ritual, I am the sacrifice, I am the offering to the ancestors, I am the healing herb; I am the mantra, I am the ghee, I am the fire, and I am the act of offering.
I am the father of this world, the mother, the sustainer and the grandsire; the one to be known, the purifier, the syllable Om, and the Rig, Sama and Yajur Vedas.
I am the goal, the support, the lord, the witness, the abode, the refuge and the friend; the origin, the dissolution and the ground; the treasure-house and the imperishable seed.
tapāmyahamahaṃ varṣaṃ nigṛhṇāmyutsṛjāmi ca amṛtaṃ caiva mṛtyuśca sadasaccāhamarjuna
I give heat; I hold back the rain and send it forth. I am immortality and also death, being and non-being, Arjuna.
Verses 9.20–9.25
When the merit runs out
Ritual can buy heaven, but heaven runs out: when the merit is spent, people come back down (9.21). Those who think only of him are different: he carries what they lack and protects what they have (9.22).
Those who know the three Vedas, drink the soma and are cleansed of sin worship me with sacrifices and pray for the way to heaven. Reaching the holy world of Indra, they enjoy the divine pleasures of the gods.
te taṃ bhuktvā svargalokaṃ viśālaṃ kṣīṇe puṇye martyalokaṃ viśanti eva trayīdharmamanuprapannā gatāgataṃ kāmakāmā labhante
Having enjoyed that vast heaven, when their merit is spent they enter the world of mortals again. Following the rituals of the three Vedas and wanting enjoyment, they come and go.
Those devoted to the gods go to the gods; those devoted to the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship spirits go to the spirits; and my worshippers come to me.
Verses 9.26–9.29
Offered with love
A leaf, a flower, a fruit, a little water: if it is offered with love, he accepts it (9.26). So whatever you do, eat, give or endure, make it an offering, and be free.
So you will be freed from the bonds of action and their good and bad fruits. With your self disciplined by the yoga of renunciation, freed, you will come to me.
samo'haṃ sarvabhūteṣu na me dveṣyo'sti na priyaḥ ye bhajanti tu māṃ bhaktyā mayi te teṣu cāpyaham
I am the same to all beings; to me none is hateful and none dear. But those who worship me with devotion are in me, and I am in them.
Verses 9.30–9.34
The lotus rises from the mud
Even someone of very bad conduct who turns to him wholeheartedly should be counted as good, and soon becomes so. Whatever one's birth, the way is open. "My devotee never perishes" (9.31). Fix your mind on me, and you will come to me (9.34).
