Krishna now speaks of himself: the eightfold nature of matter and mind, and the higher nature that is life itself. He is the taste in water and the light of sun and moon, the thread on which everything is strung like pearls. His maya of the three qualities hides him, and only those who turn to him cross it. Rarest of all is the one who sees, "Vasudeva is everything."
Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect, ego: that is Krishna's lower nature (7.4). Beyond it is the higher, the life that holds the world together. Both come from him, and all of it hangs on him like pearls on a thread (7.7).
There is nothing whatever higher than me, Dhananjaya. All this is strung on me like pearls on a thread.
Verses 7.8–7.12
The taste in water
Where is God in the everyday? Krishna answers: the taste in water, the light of the sun and moon, the fragrance of the earth, the brilliance of fire, the strength of the strong, the seed of every being.
I am the taste in water, son of Kunti, the light of the moon and the sun, the syllable Om in all the Vedas, the sound in space and the strength in people.
ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasāstāmasāśca ye matta eveti tānviddhi natvahaṃ teṣu te mayi
Whatever states of being there are, of goodness, passion or dullness, know that they come from me alone. But I am not in them; they are in me.
Verses 7.13–7.15
The veil of the three qualities
Woven of the three qualities, his divine maya is hard to cross (7.14). The whole world is dazzled by it and misses what lies behind. But those who turn to him walk straight through the veil.
na māṃ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ māyayāpahṛtajñānā āsuraṃ bhāvamāśritāḥ
Wrongdoers, the deluded and the lowest of people do not take refuge in me; their knowledge stolen by maya, they cling to a demonic nature.
Verses 7.16–7.19
Four kinds of seekers
Four kinds of people turn to him: the distressed, the curious, the ones who want something, and the wise (7.16). All are noble, but the wise, who ask for nothing, are his very Self. After many lives they see that Vasudeva is everything.
bahūnāṃ janmanāmante jñānavānmāṃ prapadyate vāsudevaḥ sarvamiti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ
At the end of many births the wise one comes to me, realising, "Vasudeva is everything." Such a great soul is very rare.
Verses 7.20–7.30
Knowing past, present and future
People pray to many gods for many things, and Krishna gives even that faith its strength. But he himself stays veiled by yogamaya: he knows every being that was, is and will be, and no one knows him (7.26).
sādhibhūtādhidaivaṃ māṃ sādhiyajñaṃ ca ye viduḥ prayāṇakāle'pi ca māṃ te viduryuktacetasaḥ
Those who know me together with the realm of beings, the realm of the gods and the realm of sacrifice, their minds steadfast, know me even at the hour of death.
